Koh Tao
Imagine a small tropical island with a rich jungle in the centre and surrounded by lovely quiet, palm tree laced beaches. You're imagining Koh Tao, off the southern east coast of Thailand, not far from the better known but more crowded Koh Samui. This pretty island is little more than 21 square km in size and located about 70 km east of the coastline between Suratthani and Chumphon, in the Gulf of Thailand.

About 15 years ago, the first backpackers arrived from neighbouring Koh Phangan. Rumours spread quickly about the islands’ unspoiled beauty, especially for its marine life and coral reefs. It soon became one of the major dive sites in Thailand and SE-Asia, attracting beginners and professionals alike. Koh Tao has now evolved into a haven for divers, adventurers, travellers and holidaymakers from around the world.

Koh Tao is generally divided into 4 main areas:

"Sairee Beach"
with its white sandy beach stretching about 1.7km over most of the west coast, interrupted only by a few huge boulders. Being the most popular area on Tao, Sairee offers a wide range of accommodation, dive centres, restaurants, shops, beach bars, travel & email services, etc.

"Mae Haad"
All boats arrive & depart here. Quite a lot going on here now, but still managed to keep some of it's old fishing village charm.

"Chalok Baa Kao"
This is the third largest beach located on the southern coast, facing Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. This bay is smaller than Sairee, but offers a similar range of accommodation, eateries and nightlife.

"Hin Wong Bay"
On the north east coast - this bay is abundant with intact coral reefs but there is not much with regards to accommodation.
