Marine Conservation

In 2004 the dive shops joined forces and petitioned the local government to declare certain areas Marine Sanctuaries. The petition was successful and now the region of Lapus Lapus, Gato Island , Lighthouse Reef and Monad Shoal are government declared fish sanctuaries. A sanctuary fee of A Php 100.00 per day is enforced upon all divers who visit these sites; the money gathered is utilized for mooring buoy projects, sanctuary protection materials and to employ local fish wardens to patrol the sanctuary areas. The dive shops are still working together to enforce the protection of these sanctuaries and hope to add further areas to the protected regions soon.

Project AWARE Go ECO Operator Status

Exotic Divers is the latest PADI dive centre to be awarded with Project AWARE Go ECO Operator status in 2006. Project AWARE Foundation, the dive industry’s leading non-profit environmental organisation, launched the Go ECO campaign into the Asia Pacific region in 2005.

CORAL WATCH SURVEY

As a Project Aware dive shop, Exotic Divers encourage their divers to participate in their weekly coral watch dive. Using the official Project Aware coral watch health charts, they are tracking the health of the coral reefs surrounding Malapascua Island. All data gathered is submitted to Project Aware for their use in their international coral watch survey
