When to go Vietnam is split into 3 different climate zones with the south having two seasons: the wet period from May to November and the dry period from December to April. The north also has two seasons, but here it is basically the other way round with cool damp winters from November to April and hot summers from May to October. The wettest time on the central coast is from mid-October till mid-December and the best time to travel to this part of Vietnam including Nha Trang is generally from February through to September/October. Water temperatures in this area range between 24ºC and 30ºC, depending on the season. Getting there There are daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City via Singapore with Singapore Airlines. The flight from London to Singapore takes about 12 hours and it is another 1,5 hours to Saigon from there. You will most likely have to stay one night in Ho Chi Minh City to catch the daily 45-minute flight with Vietnam Airlines to Nha Trang. Getting around The best way to get around Nha Trang is either by bicycle or moped, both of which can be rented from the Ana Mandara Resort. Entry Requirements Every foreign visitor requires a valid passport as well as a visa, which should be arranged for in good time before your departure. Local Airport Tax The domestic departure tax in Vietnam is US$1,50 and the international departure tax US$10.00 Baggage Allowance 23 kg. Language The official language is Vietnamese, whereas you will find a lot of people also speak Russian, French, Chinese and English. Money The official currency is the Vietnamese Dong, but the US Dollar is treated as the second official currency and usually preferred by the locals. There are four ways to exchange currency: at a bank, through an authorised exchange bureau, at hotel reception desks and on the black market. The best rates are usually offered by the banks, the worst rates on the black market. Credit Cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted in all major cities and tourist resorts. However, it might be wise to have US Dollars cash on you for the smaller purchases you are planning to make. Health There are no vaccinations required to enter Vietnam, but inoculations for Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A are highly recommended. Malaria risk exists throughout Vietnam EXCEPT in urban areas, the Red River delta and the coastal plains of Nha Trang, so there is no need for preventative medication if you are not planning to venture out too far. Even though Vietnam is a tropical country with some of the usual tropical diseases, we can assure you that with a little knowledge of basic precautions you will be unlikely to experience anything other than maybe jetlag, an upset stomach, sunburn and the effects of too many duty-free beverages. |
