 When to go Located in the tropics but outside of the hurricane belt, Curaçao has a warm, sunny climate year round, with average air temperatures around 27ºC and water temperatures around 26ºC. Most marked by short occasional showers, usually only at night, and continued blue skies during daytime. The total annual rainfall is minimal, most of which falls during the months of October and December. Getting there KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has daily flights to Curaçao via Amsterdam from various UK aiports. There is also the option of flying via Amsterdam to Bonaire and take a short island hopper flight to Curaçao with BonairExel. The flight from Amsterdam takes about 9 hours. Getting around Public buses are constantly overcrowded and generally not the preferred way to get around. If you are staying in the west of the island it is highly recommended to rent a car, especially if you are interested in exploring the sights. Hotels in this area will usually offer a free day-shuttle service only into Willemstad and there are guided island tours available as well. Entry Requirements European community nationals only require a valid passport and a return ticket. Baggage allowance 20kg per person Local Airport Tax US$10.00 on local flights and US$20.00 on all international flights, which is payable upon your departure in Curaçao. Language Dutch is the official language, but the local population also speaks Papiamento, a mixture of Dutch, African, French, Portuguese, Spanish and English. Anyone remotely involved with tourism also speaks English, as well as Spanish and of course Dutch. Remember to speak slowly, the locals are used to American English and it might take them some time to get used to your accent. Money Prices are usually quoted in US dollars, which has become the second official currency, and Travellers Checks and most major Credit Cards are widely accepted. Health No special vaccinations are required prior to arrival. It is safe to drink tap water anywhere on this island, however it might be worth taking some insect repellent with you. |
