Marine Conservation In 1926 two major institutions were founded: The Bermuda Biological Station and the Bermuda Aquarium, to promote research, education and appreciation of the marine environment. In 1966 The Coral Reef Preserves Act, and in 1978 a protected species order was passed under the Fisheries Act that completely banned the harvest of any coral, and consequently transforming the islands of Bermuda into a coral preserve. The narrow escape from ecological disaster, following the grounding of the fully laden super tanker Aguila Azteca on the northern Bermudan reefs, resulted in a 30-mile "area to be avoided" by all commercial shipping not calling at Bermuda. It goes without saying that all of the ship-wrecks off Bermuda are protected by law and it is strictly forbidden to interfere, excavate or remove anything of marine of historical interest. |
